01 / Overview

At 9:07 am Moscow time on April 12, 1961, former Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin took off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome aboard the Vostok 1 spacecraft and orbited the Earth at an apogee of 301 kilometers, taking 1 hour and 48 minutes. He safely returned at 10:55 am and landed in the Smilovka village area of Saratov Oblast, completing the world's first manned spaceflight and realizing humanity's desire to enter space. The United Nations has designated this day as the International Day of Human Space Flight. On March 18, 1965, former Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov completed a 12 minute spacewalk during the ascent of the Vostok 2 spacecraft, becoming the first astronaut in history to conduct a spacewalk and earning the title of "Hero of the Former Soviet Union" twice. On October 15, 2003, at 9:00 am, Yang Liwei boarded the Long March 2F rocket, China's first person to enter space.

02 / How visitors use it

The unit is designed for unsupervised public use: controls are recessed or shielded, moving parts are enclosed, and the interface is operable by a child of about six with no instruction. Where a screen is used, the language can be switched without changing the hardware, and the content can be replaced on site.

03 / The science behind it

I looked around, but I didn't see any God or angels, only mountains, rivers, and people. "This is a message from Yuri Gagarin, the first Soviet cosmonaut to go into space. On April 12, 1961, humans flew into outer space for the first time, taking a successful and profound step towards space exploration, marking an important milestone in human space history. Yuri Gagarin's exploration of space had a profound impact on human science, technology, and culture. His courage and perseverance will be forever remembered, and his spirit of exploration will continue to inspire humanity to venture into unknown territories and pursue deeper space exploration. Gagarin's actions had a profound impact on subsequent space exploration activities.

04 / Built for a public floor

Every unit leaves the factory after a running test: mechanisms cycled, electronics burned in, edges dressed, fixings torqued and marked. Wear parts — bearings, sliders, lamps, belts, touch panels — are modular and listed on the spare-part sheet, so a venue technician can replace them without returning the exhibit. Crating is plywood with foam blocking; the loading plan and packing list travel with the shipment.
