01 / Overview

The Jiaolong is the first manned submersible independently designed and integrated by China. It is 8.2 meters long, 3.0 meters wide, and 3.4 meters high, with a self weight of no more than 22 tons and a maximum load of 240 kilograms. The maximum speed of the Jiaolong is 25 nautical miles per hour, the cruising speed is 1 nautical mile per hour, and the maximum diving depth is 7062 meters. Theoretically, it can explore 99.8% of the world's oceans. The Jiaolong has multiple functions, including high-precision terrain mapping, mineral resource exploration, biological survey and other deep-sea tasks. It can also deploy equipment at designated locations, inspect submarine cables and pipelines, and is of great significance for the exploration of resources such as polymetallic nodules and cobalt crusts. It not only showcases China's technological strength, but also provides valuable data for international deep-sea research.

02 / How visitors use it

The unit is designed for unsupervised public use: controls are recessed or shielded, moving parts are enclosed, and the interface is operable by a child of about six with no instruction. Where a screen is used, the language can be switched without changing the hardware, and the content can be replaced on site.

03 / The science behind it

(1) The Jiaolong manned submersible is a manned submersible designed and independently integrated by China. As of February 23, 2024, the Jiaolong has successfully completed 23 dives in the South Atlantic and set a new record of nine dives in nine days. The length, width, and height of Jiaolong are 8.2 meters, 3.0 meters, and 3.4 meters, respectively. The empty weight does not exceed 22 tons, and the maximum load is 240 kilograms. The maximum speed is 25 nautical miles per hour, and the cruising speed is 1 nautical mile per hour. The maximum working design depth is 7000 meters, theoretically covering 99.8% of the world's oceans. (2) The Jiaolong, a deep-sea submersible independently developed by China, has extremely high depth and pressure resistance. Its tasks include deep-sea scientific research, deep-sea resource exploration, deep-sea archaeological excavation, etc. The Jiaolong not only represents China's technological strength, but also provides the international community with a deeper understanding of deep-sea environment and biology.

04 / Built for a public floor

Every unit leaves the factory after a running test: mechanisms cycled, electronics burned in, edges dressed, fixings torqued and marked. Wear parts — bearings, sliders, lamps, belts, touch panels — are modular and listed on the spare-part sheet, so a venue technician can replace them without returning the exhibit. Crating is plywood with foam blocking; the loading plan and packing list travel with the shipment.
