01 / Overview

Polymetallic sulfides are mainly formed in hydrothermal vent areas, and the deposits are blocky with components including lead sulfide, zinc, copper, gold, etc.

02 / How visitors use it

The unit is designed for unsupervised public use: controls are recessed or shielded, moving parts are enclosed, and the interface is operable by a child of about six with no instruction. Where a screen is used, the language can be switched without changing the hardware, and the content can be replaced on site.

03 / The science behind it

Polymetallic sulfides, also known as seafloor massive sulfides, are an important underwater mineral resource. From the perspective of composition and distribution, polymetallic sulfides are mainly rich in various metal elements such as copper, iron, zinc, silver, and gold, and are submarine deposits composed of various metal sulfide minerals. The distribution of such mineral deposits has obvious structural correlation, mainly concentrated at the boundaries of tectonic plates such as mid ocean ridges, back arc ridges, and active volcanic arcs. Most of them are found in the mid ocean ridge area at a depth of about 2000 meters, and their distribution positions are highly consistent with the distribution of hydrothermal activity on the seabed, which also establishes an inseparable relationship between the two. The core of the formation of polymetallic sulfide deposits is the continuous action of seafloor hydrothermal activity, which can be divided into five continuous and complete stages: "seawater infiltration heating reaction mineral carrying cooling precipitation accumulation mineralization". The specific mechanism is as follows: firstly, at the boundary of tectonic plates, there are a large number of cracks and fractures in the crust, and seafloor seawater.

04 / Built for a public floor

Every unit leaves the factory after a running test: mechanisms cycled, electronics burned in, edges dressed, fixings torqued and marked. Wear parts — bearings, sliders, lamps, belts, touch panels — are modular and listed on the spare-part sheet, so a venue technician can replace them without returning the exhibit. Crating is plywood with foam blocking; the loading plan and packing list travel with the shipment.
