01 / Overview

This project enables visitors to understand the importance and working principle of seat belts.

02 / How visitors use it

The unit is designed for unsupervised public use: controls are recessed or shielded, moving parts are enclosed, and the interface is operable by a child of about six with no instruction. Where a screen is used, the language can be switched without changing the hardware, and the content can be replaced on site.

03 / The science behind it

Seat belts are designed to protect passengers from injuries caused by collisions or sudden braking. As part of the passenger restraint system, seat belts can prevent passengers from colliding with objects or other passengers inside the car, avoiding injury, and also preventing passengers from being thrown out of the car. Most cars nowadays are equipped with three-point seat belts, which restrain the front thighs and shoulders. Pre tensioned seat belts tighten the straps to prevent passengers from stretching forward in the event of an impact. Once an impact occurs, the pre tensioned seat belt will immediately tighten the strap, which will reduce the power generated by passengers in the impact. Like airbags, pre tensioned seat belts are controlled by body sensors, and most use inflation gas to pull the piston and tighten the seat belt.

04 / Built for a public floor

Every unit leaves the factory after a running test: mechanisms cycled, electronics burned in, edges dressed, fixings torqued and marked. Wear parts — bearings, sliders, lamps, belts, touch panels — are modular and listed on the spare-part sheet, so a venue technician can replace them without returning the exhibit. Crating is plywood with foam blocking; the loading plan and packing list travel with the shipment.
