01 / Overview

The exhibit uses interactive methods to allow visitors to determine the direction of sound and understand the binaural effect by relying on the volume difference, time difference, and timbre difference between the two ears.

02 / How visitors use it

Interaction type: Multimedia interactive. The unit is designed for unsupervised public use: controls are recessed or shielded, moving parts are enclosed, and the interface is operable by a child of about six with no instruction. Where a screen is used, the language can be switched without changing the hardware, and the content can be replaced on site.

03 / The science behind it

The exhibit features a 19 inch touch all-in-one machine, with a voice capture area above the touch table and a hidden microphone inside. There are picture frame style photo paintings hanging on the wall, and ceiling speakers are installed at the four corners and middle positions. visitors speaks into the microphone according to the touch screen prompt, and begins speaking into the opened microphone. The microphone collects and records the person's voice, and the computer selects any speaker on the wall through software to play. visitors will hear the participant's words coming from one of the speakers. visitors judges and selects which speaker is making the sound on the touch screen. If visitors chooses correctly, the blue LED aperture around the corresponding speaker will light up. If wrong, the red LED aperture around the selected speaker will light up, and the correct blue LED aperture will also light up.

04 / Built for a public floor

Every unit leaves the factory after a running test: mechanisms cycled, electronics burned in, edges dressed, fixings torqued and marked. Wear parts — bearings, sliders, lamps, belts, touch panels — are modular and listed on the spare-part sheet, so a venue technician can replace them without returning the exhibit. Crating is plywood with foam blocking; the loading plan and packing list travel with the shipment.
