01 / Overview

The interesting phenomenon that no matter where the ball falls, it will eventually bounce back to the focal light demonstrates the principles of paraboloid and parabolic focus. The exhibit consists of a platform, a lifting mechanism, a probability release mechanism, a reflective surface, etc; After the exhibit is launched, the exhibit organization automatically lifts the small ball to the top and vertically drops it onto the parabolic surface through any hole through the top ball distribution device. And bounce back towards the lamp suspended at the focal point of the parabolic surface. After the demonstration, the ball will fall into the parabolic surface and return through the "small hole" in the parabolic surface. Target audience: Adolescents aged 6-15. Display format: Electromechanical interactive device operation instructions (audience experience) 1 Visitors press the 'start' button; After multiple operation experiences, visitors will find that the ball bounces to the focal light every time; 3. Understand the principle of parabolic focusing. Description of the intrinsic connections between storylines and exhibits in mathematics.

02 / How visitors use it

Interaction type: Interactive installation. The unit is designed for unsupervised public use: controls are recessed or shielded, moving parts are enclosed, and the interface is operable by a child of about six with no instruction. Where a screen is used, the language can be switched without changing the hardware, and the content can be replaced on site.

03 / The science behind it

1. Parabolic: A parabolic surface refers to the surface obtained by rotating a parabola 180 degrees. A parabola in mathematics is a set of points on the same plane that are equidistant from a fixed point (focal point) and from a fixed line (guide line). A parabolic surface is a type of quadratic surface. There are two types of paraboloids: elliptical paraboloids and hyperbolic paraboloids. 2. Parabolic mirror: a mirror with a reflective surface that is a parabolic surface. If a "point light source" is placed at its focal point, the light will be reflected by a mirror and emitted parallel to the main axis of the mirror; Searchlights and car headlights are equipped with parabolic mirrors, which apply this principle to obtain parallel beams for illumination. On the contrary, if light parallel to the main axis is projected onto a mirror surface, it will converge at its focal point after reflection; Reflective astronomical telescopes are equipped with parabolic mirrors, which apply this principle to image distant celestial bodies for observation. Reference materials.

04 / Built for a public floor

Every unit leaves the factory after a running test: mechanisms cycled, electronics burned in, edges dressed, fixings torqued and marked. Wear parts — bearings, sliders, lamps, belts, touch panels — are modular and listed on the spare-part sheet, so a venue technician can replace them without returning the exhibit. Crating is plywood with foam blocking; the loading plan and packing list travel with the shipment.
